Oct 19, 2021
On October 13, the Volvo Group demonstrated the world's first car made of fossil-free steel supplied by the Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB-manufactured by Volvo Construction Equipment's factory in Blass, Sweden. In the green steel cooperation activity that day, it was announced that more concept cars and components made of SSAB's non-fossil steel will be launched in 2022.
On October 13, at the green steel cooperation event in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo Group President and CEO Martin Lundstedt and Volvo Group President and CEO Melker Jernberg co-chaired the unveiling ceremony of this machine. At the premiere, the audience saw the world's first non-fossil steel machine, which is a truck used for mining and quarrying, and can be used with other automatic vehicles on a pre-set route. Pick up and transport materials on board. The car is driven by an electric motor and does not emit exhaust gas during operation. In addition, another breakthrough insight into sustainable steel cooperation was also shared at the meeting. Speakers such as Thierry Breton, Commissioner of the European union 's Internal Market, Ibrahim Baylan, Minister of Enterprise and Innovation of Sweden, and Martin Lindqvist, CEO of SSAB, participated in the event.
The Volvo Group is committed to achieving climate neutrality and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain by 2040, and is moving towards the development of sustainable future transportation and infrastructure solutions. With the electrification of vehicles and machines, Volvo is determined to reduce the carbon footprint of its entire supply chain. This latest innovation is a step forward on this road.
For the Volvo Group and the entire transportation and infrastructure industry, the move to green steel is an important step, especially considering that about 70% of the truck's weight comes from steel and cast iron, and the figure for Volvo machines is even higher. The production of this concept machine at Volvo Construction Equipment's plant in Bras is just the beginning. Small-scale mass production is planned by 2022, followed by mass production.
